Toxins and Pets Safety

Were you aware that typical candles may emit harmful toxic chemicals into the air? Toxins released into the air from a burning candle can affect everyone in the household, including your pets. If they are harmful to you, they are probably harmful to your pets as well.*

The effect of toxins on your pets is magnified because they are smaller and can’t process toxins as quickly. Pets are usually more sensitive to smell than we are, so some fragrances we enjoy could be overwhelming to your dog or cat. Rabbits, mice, and other small pets can also be adversely affected. Birds are especially sensitive to indoor air pollution. It’s important as responsible pet owners to observe our pets, watch for signs and/or symptoms and take them to the Veterinarian immediately when necessary.

As more consumers are becoming increasingly health-conscious, some companies are producing better quality candles. Natural soy-based candles generally do not contain the same toxic chemicals as traditional candles, and may be safer to burn in your home. Always look for a high quality candle, and try to avoid lead-wicks and chemicals additives (such as UV inhibitors or wax hardeners).

A wagging tail or curious paws could easily knock over a candle. You should always follow safety precautions to avoid serious injuries or fires. Keep lit candles out of reach, and never leave a pet unattended near an open flame. Always read "Warning" labels on candles and follow directions.

Regardless of the type of candle you choose, always burn a candle in a well-ventilated area, and allow your pet the option of leaving the room or going outside. Some pets will be more sensitive than others, so make sure to give them an “out.”
